Owning a leather jacket is an investment. With the high amount of style, durability and comfort it provides, it’s one of your most valuable outerwear pieces. Whether you have the more modern style of a leather jacket or the traditional bomber-style one, you purchase it expecting it to last for a long time.

No matter how durable an item may be, if they’re not afforded the right amount of care then it won’t be able to last as long as it should. This is why if you want to fully enjoy your leather jacket, you need to pay proper attention to keeping it clean.

A lot of people think that running a damp cloth with mild soap on a leather jacket is the only way to care for a leather jacket. Although it does work, there are other alternatives to cleaning your leather jacket. By using a brush, for example.

There is a right and wrong way to brush your leather jacket. Here are tips to ensure that you’re brushing your leather the right way.

Make sure your leather jacket is clean

Remove any set-in dirt or stains found in your leather jacket before brushing it. If you don’t, brushing could cause the stain or dirt to settle deeper into its fabric. Not to mention, stains will still remain visible even after you brush your leather jacket.

You can remove them by using a damp washcloth and gently rubbing your leather jacket with it. Detergent or soap isn’t necessary either.

Check the tag

A lot of leather jackets come with a care label detailing instructions for cleaning and maintaining them. They’re usually found on the inside collar of the jacket.

Check if your leather jacket has one and see if brushing it is one of the recommendations from the manufacturer.

Choose a brush with soft bristles

Be careful not to clean your leather jacket with just any brush that you find in your home. Leather jackets are a lot more sensitive to brushes with hard or stiff bristles as they could scratch your jacket and leave permanent marks behind.

You need to make sure that your brush has soft bristles. There are brushes available out there that were designed specifically for cleaning leather. However, any standard brush is acceptable as long as it has soft bristles.

Use a flat surface

Work your way from the top

When brushing your leather jacket, start the top and make your way to the bottom. Make sure to press the brush gently, pushing it downwards. Use steady strokes slowly to thoroughly remove any debris, dirt, or dust clinging to your jacket.

Once you’re done brushing the front, flip it over to start brushing the back, starting from the top again and going down to the bottom. No other cleaning product is needed for this. A clean brush with soft bristles is more than enough.
